A member of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, Darrell Irions of Tampa Bay serves as chief executive officer of the St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA). Recognized as an expert in the housing industry, Darrell Irions has led SPHA in such collaborative efforts as the redevelopment of the Jordan Park public housing community, the planning of an accessible housing development for wounded military veterans, and the involvement of the local community in several outreach activities.
On of those outreach activities is the annual Father's Day event, jointly hosted by the housing authorities of St. Petersburg, Dunedin, and Clearwater for the residents of their subsidized housing programs. Statistics reveal that a majority of families throughout the nation's public housing developments experience absent fathers and low income single women as heads of households. Through the Father's Day event, the local housing authorities are working together to strengthen families and to empower fathers.
To encourage involvement in the yearly Father's Day event, the housing authorities hold a variety of fun and family‐friendly activities for residents of all ages, such as bounce houses, face painting, live music, complimentary refreshments, and much more. A host of community organizations have booths at the event with important resources for fathers and their families. The next Father's Day event is planned for Saturday, June 14, 2014.
The Father's Day event is part of the United States Housing and Urban Development (HUD) nationwide initiative to offer a place for fathers and children to enjoy time together and for fathers to learn about local HUD programs and services.
